A fun little exercise that's been floating around the interwebs recently. Basically you chart out a map of people and things that have influenced you artistically so you can refer to it if you ever hit a wall or something. It's quite interesting to see what has influenced other artists..

I may be missing a few major ones.. and the size-influence ratios are prolly off here and there but this pretty much covers it.

**UPDATE** Later that night, the bar we were at just so happen to be was less than a block away from Gretzky's torch route. We bolted outside and were right there as he turned the corner and passed us by. It was surreal.

Went and saw the torch relay as it passed through the Millennium Gate in Chinatown this morning. After thrusting my camera up into the air and snapping wildly I managed to score this shot. Definitely got the warm fuzzy feeling as the flame trotted along by. It's a good day to be a Vancouverite!
I wasn't able to catch Arnie bare the torch at Stanley Park this morning, but luckily my buddy Kevin did and he says this is an accurate portrayal of how it went down.

On a completely unrelated note, are there any twitterfolk out there? I'm on as @jimmyly. I tend to post more random sketches on there than on this blog; mixed in with a healthy dose if inane musings of course.
As of late, it seems that the only twitterers who find me interesting are spambots who have naughty pictures. We need to fix this.

more watercolour studies

Still trying to muscle my way into the chaotic world of watercolors.
Top sketch is at Lighthouse Park. Dave, Maki, Edy, Halis and me, spent a day checkin out this hidden little area in West Van. It was cool to catch up with everyone, weather was awesome and I got ravaged by mosquito's. It was a good day.
Bottom sketch is of the Burrard Bridge with English Bay peeking out from behind. Painted at Granville Island.
Also saw a seagull totally munching on the corpse of a small bird. I thought all they ate was garbage.

Still life from a few days ago of my 2 favorite homee's. (2-3 hrs work)

I've kind of been brute-forcing my way into the world of watercolor sketching... with very blotchy results. It seems like such an unpredictable medium; one moment it looks fine and then it suddenly mutates into something horribly grotesque. Kind of feels like I'm learning how to paint all over again.
Jonathan was kind enough to show me how it's done.. after the fact. 'got some good tips so hopefully the next foray will be a wee bit more successful (thnx yo!)
And then Edison blew it out of the water with his fancy oils.

Must.. keep.. practicing.

sidenote: this is probably the least stylistically consistent artist blog -ever.

FUN FACT: FLCL is probably the main reason why I decided to become a concept artist oh so many years ago.

A slightly redesigned Lucca from Chrono Trigger. I'm usually not one for fanart; but for a game of such extraordinary caliber (both in story and gameplay), exceptions can be made. It also provided a nice break from all the environment work I've been doing.

It's been ridiculously cold in Vancouver lately. I think someone cast "Ice 2" over the city.

This piece evolved quite a bit from the original thumbnail. There was lots of experimenting and exploring so it was quite fun to work on. There are still a few issues here and there but overall I think it turned out ok.

Cambodia Color Studies

Here's some color studies based on photo's taken while traveling last Fall. These one's specifically were from around the Sihanoukville area in Cambodia. I had to tweak certain elements for design and compositional purposes.... and because my camera work is abysmal.
I tried to simplify things as much as possible to capture just the essence of the environments
